To understand the story of how Block Island Scones got it start, is to understand the comfort and hospitality inherent of the tiny island of Block Island. A tiny, 7-mile long dot in the Atlantic Ocean, 15-miles out-to-sea from the Rhode Island mainland, lies a summer getaway unlike any other and a special gathering place for generations of vacationers including our family.
Pat Doyle originally perfected her special scone recipe (a biscuit like cake made from all-natural ingredients) out of her love for baking and the camaraderie inherent with good food. Pat began selling her freshly baked scones at The Block Island, summer farmers’ market. They were an instant success and every Saturday, scores of summer-folk lined up at her stand before the market even opened. Sales were brisk and Pat quickly became known as “The Block Island Scone Lady,” a title she carried for twenty-five years.
Pat has now passed her scone business onto the next generation of Doyles’ and to island local, Kate Ryan, who still bakes and sells Block Island Scones at the Wednesday and Saturday, Block Island summer farmers’ market. Pat’s daughter-in-law, Meg Doyle, handles the mail-order and e-commerce division of Block Island Scones from her home-base in Texas, where Meg, her husband, and three active children are happily enjoying the warm, southern hospitality of their neighbors and all those great ,”big” Texas experiences. To keep in touch with their New England roots, the family still returns to Block Island for a few weeks each summer to reconnect with friends and family.
You can now make our famous Block Island scones anywhere with the original Block Island farmers’ market recipe scone mix, shipped directly to your kitchen. We hope you too will enjoy the comforts of camaraderie when you bake a batch of Block Island Scones in your own kitchen! Not to mention the delicious smell of fresh scones baking in your oven! Talk about impressing your family and guests!
